Dragon Boat Racing to Celebrate Dragon Boat Festival | Monday,June 10,2024

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival that usually falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, which typically falls in May or June in the Gregorian calendar. The festival is celebrated in many countries and regions with Chinese communities, including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and others.

The Dragon Boat Festival has a rich history and folklore associated with it. It commemorates the death of the famous Chinese poet and politician Qu Yuan, who lived during the Warring States period of ancient China. Qu Yuan was known for his patriotism and loyalty to his country, but when his state fell into the hands of corrupt officials, he drowned himself in the Miluo River out of despair. The locals rushed to the river to save him but were unsuccessful, so they began throwing rice dumplings, known as zongzi, into the river to prevent the fish from eating his body and to show respect for Qu Yuan. Dragon boat races were also held to search for his body, which gave rise to the tradition of dragon boat racing during the festival.

Realgar is a type of mineral that is believed to have the power to ward off evil spirits and diseases. People drink realgar wine to protect themselves from harm and to pray for good health and fortune.

- Wearing Perfume Pouches: Perfume pouches, also known as sachets, are small bags filled with fragrant herbs and spices. They are often worn or hung during the festival to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. Perfume pouches are also used to decorate homes or given as gifts to friends and family.

- Participating in Cultural Activities: Many Dragon Boat Festival celebrations also include cultural activities such as traditional music and dance performances, martial arts demonstrations, and crafts exhibitions.
